UK - Norway RNLI Fund Raising 2012

  •

Would you drive over 3500 miles just to catch a fish? No? Well that is exactly what 4 Yorkshire fishermen are doing. However, they aren’t doing it just for the odd cod or halibut, they are doing it with an aim to raise over £10,000 for the RNLI.

The Boody Long Way Up

Raising funds for the RNLI On Saturday 7th April 2012 the team will load their 4x4 truck from their base in Yorkshire with enough equipment to see them the whole way to Skjervoy in Norway and back. They will travel to the ferry port in Harwich, UK then face a 13 hour ferry journey to Esjberg in Denmark. Once in Denmark they will head north to the top of the country and catch another ferry from Hirtshals to Stavern in Norway. From Norway they will head up towards the capital, Oslo and then on to the border of Sweden. A long, and hopefully very scenic, drive up through the Swedish mountain passes will see them enter Finland. Once into Finland they will head up the highway to the border of Norway and onto the Fjords to their final destination, Skjervoy - a quaint little fishing village at the top of Norway. Temperatures here drop as low as minus 40 degrees through the winter with up to 20 hours of daylight at other times. With any luck, the famous Northern lights will put in an appearance for them.

Once they get to their destination, a week’s boat fishing will be undertaken with the guys hoping for catches of 40lb+ cod and halibut. They will be running a couple of competitions to see who can guess the heaviest catch and also the total mileage of the whole trip, with some excellent prizes to be had. Whilst in Skjervoy they will also be meeting up with the NSSR (The Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue), the RNLI’s equivalent and exchanging gifts and seeing how the Norwegian crews operate.

Once their week of fishing and public relations is over, the team will head back home and plan to publish their story to a few websites and magazines. Throughout their planning of the trip they are looking for companies to support their adventure. The team will be contacting companies to supply them with goods to use and review on the trip and then raffle or auction off after, with all proceeds going directly to the RNLI. All supporters will also be listed on their website, facebook link and could be given advertising space on their 4x4.
