Today (6 January 2009) at Newcastle-under-Lyme Magistrates Court, fishing without a valid rod licence cost nine cheating anglers a total of £1,425. The offences related to instances of fishing without a rod licence at locations in Whitmore, Chesterton and Consall. Around 8,000 fish in Ely have been re-homed by the Environment Agency due to spawning being too successful. Large numbers of healthy juvenile roach, rudd and common bream have been thriving in two fishing lakes near Ely but there were so many fish they were competing for food.
