The public benefits of conservation and economic generation provided by shooting and angling will become increasingly important as spending cuts come into effect, delegates at the Liberal Democrat conference in Liverpool were told last night.

Angling Trust fishing newsSpeaking at the Rural Reception hosted by the UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) and the Angling Trust, the representative body for all angling, Roger Williams MP said: “There are tough times ahead. Some public funds may no longer be available. Organisations like BASC will play an increasingly important role in the future. Well managed shoots, well managed rivers are good for the economy and good for conservation.”

Lord Redesdale said “Shooting and angling provide knock-on benefits for the whole community. Fishing is one of those wonderful things and shooting has many, many benefits for leisure, for tourism and for conservation.”

Roger Furniss from the Angling Trust expressed his concern over declining fish stocks in freshwater and in the sea. He said: “There are three million anglers in this country, and angling generates £3bn for the economy every year.” He also called for a review of the role of the Environment Agency saying: “The Environment Agency needs to listen more closely to anglers who pay an annual £26m in licence fees to the Agency.”

John Swift, chief executive of BASC said: “Shooting generates £1.6bn for the economy every year and two-thirds of the rural land area is influenced in some way by shooting management. We want to make sure that wildlife and habitats continue to flourish. We are aware that many public policy areas could be influenced by cost cutting and there could be blunt and difficult problems ahead, but as we face that reality we must find practical solutions. BASC and its members, who enjoy their shooting so very, very much want to work with you."

The Angling Trust is delighted to announce that it has secured the biggest cash injection into International Coarse angling in a generation, in the form of a very generous donation of £40,000 to support some of the International Coarse Angling teams. The teams will be U14s, Ladies, Veterans and Anglers with Disabilities. Durham based HV Power Electrical Systems have very generously offered to fund these teams after an appeal by the Angling Times in conjunction with Angling Trust.

Angling Trust fishing newsStuart Porter, Managing Director of HV Power Electrical, who is a keen angler, came forward to support this great cause after reading in the Angling Times that the teams did not have sponsorship to support them in fishing the International Championships. Stuart has also promised to offer a similar level of funding for the International teams to participate in 2011. Next year the teams will all be competing in all disciplines in Italy for the World Angling Games Championships, and with this new funding the Angling Trust can now create an U14s International team to participate in 2011.

This donation is without doubt one of the biggest that angling has ever received to support our English teams fishing overseas. Without this fantastic sponsorship from HV Power Electrical, these teams would not be able to participate as Angling Trust relies very heavily on sponsorship for teams to take part at international level.

Stuart Porter said “We are just ordinary blokes who want to put something back into angling. My business partner, Alan Hardy puts funding into his passion, greyhound racing, so I thought I should do my bit for my sport - angling”.

In recent year’s, because of money being injected into the sport, the European teams have begun to overtake the England teams in their results, but it is hoped with this fantastic donation that will now see all the English teams competing at the highest level in the future and coming back with even more medals.

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of Angling Trust stated “This is a great leap forward for Team England, and for angling as a whole. We’re also very grateful to Angling Times for publicising our appeal. Plans are currently being developed for the funding of all coarse, game and sea competition angling at an international level over the next decade”.

Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager said “this donation by the sport’s new benefactor will enable the teams to approach each contest in a more professional manner. England will now be in a position to compete at the highest level in the Veterans, Disabled and Ladies World Championships, after playing the poor relations to some of our European cousins for many years. The fantastic financial arrangement with HV Power Electrical Systems has guaranteed the involvement of these teams for the next few years, and I would personally like to thank Stuart and his company for their support. I am sure their generosity will enable us to win more medals.”

We will now also be looking at developing a system which will enable us to select a team of under 14's to compete at world level from next year”.

Fish Legal’s lawyers have written to the Director General for the Environment in Brussels to request that the European Commission considers infraction proceedings against the UK government in Northern Ireland for breaches of environmental legislation under plans to reopen the River Lagan for canal navigation which would have a devastating effect on recovering salmon and trout populations.

Fish Legal fishing newsThe Lagan Canal Restoration Trust – set up to oversee the ‘restoration’ of the Lagan corridor – counts among its partners both the Government Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).

The Trust intends to introduce a series of weirs and locks, straighten banks and dredge the river bed to enable tourists to travel the from Lough Neagh to Belfast, all of which would impede the passage of wild salmon returning to spawn in the upper sections of the river and could ultimately lead to their extinction on this particular river.

Whilst the work is being carried out in a piecemeal fashion, each development is regarded by Fish Legal as a step in a much larger planned project, and should require an environmental impact assessment (EIA) because of the cumulative impact on the river.

In July, Fish Legal – an environmental NGO set up to protect fisheries in the UK - informed the Government Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) that they faced legal action should the Northern Ireland Executive decide to proceed with the development without the benefit of a full EIA into the effect such work would have on the wild salmon, as well as other migratory fish in the Lagan system. Salmon angling is very important to Northern Ireland for tourism and for the many angling clubs that fish the river.

Fish Legal has now made an official complaint to the European Commission.

Justin Neal, solicitor at Fish Legal, said:
“Whilst the Government may feel the Lagan is under-exploited by daytrippers and holiday makers, it is a habitat for wild salmon – one of the most precious and threatened species found in UK rivers. At a time in history when wild salmon numbers are at their lowest levels we feel that the plans to recreate a navigable waterway in a series of small projects is not only unlawful – but also a sly move by the authorities to avoid the need to fulfil their obligations under EU law. The Trust agreement also goes to the heart of the contradiction inherent in DCAL’s responsibilities in Northern Ireland which on the one hand include protection of inland fisheries and on the other promoting such projects. We wait to see what the European Commission thinks.”

England won the Home International Youth Fly-fishing Championship held at Grafham Water on Wednesday..

Angling Trust Fishing NewsIt was a breezy day which made conditions very demanding for all 56 competitors who fished from boats drifting 'loch-style' in the waves (anchoring is not allowed) but a lot of hard practice over the past three months paid off for England on the 1,500 acre Cambridgeshire reservoir. All of the 14 England team members caught fish, with John MacIntosh from Lancashire taking the individual champion trophy as well.

This follows England's victory in Wales last year. England's youth squad are hard to beat on their home waters having won 4 out of 5 Internationals fished in England over the past 18 years.

At the presentation dinner Team Captain, Matthew Kidd from Plymouth, praised the dedication of the whole team and the tremendous support from team manager Rob Edmunds and coach Phil Longstaffe over the past year. A team of six will fly out to Slovakia for the World Youth Rivers Championships next week.

The England Youth Flyfishing Association, which manages the team and this year’s international expects to become part of the Angling Trust's competition and performance structure later this year.

The Angling Trust Daiwa Schools National Championship 2010 was held on Wednesday 21st July 2010 at Hallcroft Fishery, Retford, Nottinghamshire with 30 teams of 5 anglers per team taking part.

Angling Trust Fishing News Valley School from Worksop once again won the winning title for the third year running with a total of 141 points in the team classification. The team consisted of; Liam Ainsworth A21, Robbie Moore B12, Dean Northage C18, Oliver Hipkiss D26 and Lewis Robinson E25. In silver medal position was Penistone Grammar School who were a late entrant into the event with 118 points. Their team were; Ryan Burkinshaw A18, Ben Howlett B30, Kyle Lockwood C8, Kiefer Dixon D21 and Sam Morfitt E2. In third position with 116 points was Smithdon High School Red from Norfolk. The team consisted of; Toby Pepper A17, Tim Pepper B4, Michael Hall C6, Tom Carlton D10, and Callum Leverett E1. In fourth place was Holgate Schools and Sports College with 115 points. Their team were; Dan Bryning A22, Sam Hunter B7, Josh Tallant C12, Jamie Hartley D13, and Niall Dunn E30.

John Hamon, teacher of the team from Valley School said “I was really pleased with the whole day as more teams were involved this year which was brilliant, as last year there were fewer and now the event is building up again and it’s all down to the work from Angling Trust and Daiwa. Everyone in the team fished pole and a lot fished chopped worm and pellet. We have an excellent team and they are all in Year 10 and came through to gel as a unit, so next year the same boys can fish again. Unfortunately this year we lost two good anglers, and one of them Reece Nicolson is fishing for the U18s England team. We also get lots of support and help from the parents, and we won the regional match on Monday fishing against 6-7 Bassetlaw schools, so have had a busy week.”

Valley School were back in the medal position with Lewis Robinson on peg E25 collecting the gold medal for the first individual position with an outstanding weight of 16.400kg. In runner up position was Tim Pepper of Smithdon High School Red on peg B4 with 15.100kg. In third position was Jamie Cook from Tudor Grange Academy Worcester Green on peg E19 with 12.950kg.

Fishing took place in hot glorious sunshine for 4 hours from 10.30am-2.30pm. The pools used on the day were Moat Outer (sections A & B), Bridge Outer (section C), Bridge Island and Croft (section D), and Reed and Canal (section E). Fish caught on the day were carp, skimmers, perch and a few roach. The venue fished really hard with carp too far out for some lengths of poles, and for anyone who struggled catching small perch. There were some good weights on the day that were made up of large single fish. More schools this year got involved from further afield as Suffolk and Ipswich, and all who took part had a fun day.

Angling Trust would like to thank Daiwa for their continued support of the Schools National Championship and for their generous sponsorship of prizes for the youngsters in this event. Daiwa also provided their consultants on the day who presented all the prizes to the competitors, and provided assistance throughout the day, Will Raison (Drennan Team England), Sandra Scotthorne, and Kieron Rich. Appreciation and thanks must also go to Terry Sears and all his staff at Daiwa Hallcroft Fisheries for their use of the water and their support and help on the day, as they did a fantastic job and were very professional.

Local pub team Four Ashes AC went one better than their Division Three runner up position on the Staffs-Worcs Canal in 2008 by taking the Angling Trust Division Two National Championship winning title in style on the Erewash Canal from Cotmanhay to Trent Lock, Derbyshire.

Angling Trust Fishing NewsCaptained by Paul Turner, the Wolverhampton based squad tore the match apart with a great percentage of high points section scorers in their 444 points match winning total. Keeping the emphasis in the West Midlands, Birmingham based Sensas Dams and Lock were the runners-up with 427 points whilst Maver North West slotted into third place with 391 points. Paul Turner paid tribute to his team and said, “The lads were basically left alone to sort out their own pegs; we found out plenty in practice, especially the areas to put chopped worm in and the areas not to. While I have the chance, on behalf of all our Four Ashes AC team I would like to thank the Angling Trust for their top organisation, - it really is a thankless task.”

The Division Two Individual Champion on the day was Steve Winter (Maver Bait Tech). Steve has had a lot of top results recently and it comes as no real surprise that he once again put in a superb effort to top the five hundred and fifty entry with 9kg 80g. Steve, a Boston based printer, drew peg K1 by the garages on Lock Lane. With continuous pegging in this area it was not an end draw but Steve set off at a blistering pace, netting a 6 oz rudd first on squatt. When he reached 120 fish he went on to his chopped worm line which was solid with perch. He had a good run of them, some to over 1 lb and a 2 lb 8 oz tench thrown in for good measure before things petered out. A lady on the far bank told Steve that she feeds the roach on a daily basis on his peg right by a lily pad. With the match well into the fourth hour he fed a bit of hemp in the said area and with an hour to go put together 5 – 6 lbs of roach to complete a fantastic day and a fantastic win with 9k080.

Runner-up Steve Ashcroft (Railway AC Sale) had an incredible start on E50 at Sandy Bottom. He tried an experimental put in with worm and his float dived under and bream number one was soon in the net; this happened the next two put ins as well! He then had to feed and picked off odd bream and skimmers to end up with 8kg 880g and a close second place. Next to Steve was Dave Yardy (Eastern MG) who picked off a few bream from the same shoal, to end with 6kg 500g. Craig Mather (Reddish AC) slotted into fourth place from K27, Lock Lane with 5kg 800g of tench and skimmers on worm.

Individuals. Steve Winter (Maver Bait Tech) 9kg 80g; Steve Ashcroft (Railway AC Sale) 8kg 880g; Dave Yardy (Eastern MG) 6kg 500g; Craig Mather (Reddish AC) 5kg 800g; Neil Mallinson (Wakefield AC) 5kg 600g; Mark Brennan (Preston Innovations Thatchers) 5kg 370g; Aaron Morton (Measham and District AC) 5kg 220g; Dave Shults (Team Raiders) 4kg 450g; Phil Turner (Tackle2fish.co.UK) 4kg 360g; Wayne Swinscoe (Maver Bait Tech) 4kg 240g.

Ten teams were promoted to the Angling Trust National Championship on the New Junction Canal, Doncaster on Saturday 6th August 2011, they are; Four Ashes AC 444; Sensas Dams and Lock MG 427; Maver North West 391; Newton Le Willows AA 386; Maver Bait Tech 384; Macclesfield Waltonians 370; Wellingborough Nene AC 366; Tri-Cast Highfield 364; Sensas North West 359; and Browning Central 356.

Fears of a back-room deal have mounted as Severn Trent Water and British Waterways have engaged in negotiations over the sewage pollution of the Shropshire Union and Staffordshire & Worcestershire canals which killed thousands of fish in April 2009

Fish Legal Fishing NewsSeveral tonnes of sewage poured from the Barnhurst Sewage Treatment Works, wiping out what is so far reported to be tens of thousands of fish along a 30 mile stretch of canal, part of which is leased to Bilston Angling Club and Wolverhampton Angling Association, both of which are members of Fish Legal and the Angling Trust.

The pollution is thought to have wiped out entire generations of different species and the effects will be felt for many years to come.
The Sewage Treatment Works, owned by Severn Trent Water, was thought to have been affected by a chemical which knocked out the bacteria which clean the sewage before it is released into the canal.

It is not yet clear who will ultimately be held responsible for the damage, because the Environment Agency (EA) is still investigating the incident well over a year after it occurred. Anglers are rightly concerned at this delay and the EA has not yet indicated when it will be able to release the details.

British Waterways has admitted to discussions with Severn Trent Water and anglers fear they are being frozen-out of the negotiations due to previous attempts to engage both organisations having been rebuffed.

Fears have been raised that the current stonewalling will lead to an unsatisfactory result for local fishing clubs which lease the waters from British Waterways, and who have found that the quality of fishing has been severely diminished since the pollution.

William Rundle, Fish Legal Solicitor, said, “Whilst it is understandable that the EA cannot provide us with full details because their investigation is ongoing, the delay and lack of consultation are very frustrating. It is difficult to understand how they could have made so little progress over such a long time, or how they can properly understand the impact of the pollution without discussing it with those who have been directly affected.”

“Of much greater concern is the total disregard Severn Trent Water is showing towards the victims of the pollution, which was discharged from their sewage treatment works. Their initial concern has not been followed up with any creditable action or engagement. We have had no communication from them since last year.”

“It is a great shame that despite being publicly funded, British Waterways does not appear to act in the best interests of the public. The lack of transparency to their discussions with Severn Trent over the pollution is worrying. Little progress has been made by an organisation set up to care for our rivers and canals, and no attempt has been made to include or consult those anglers who have been affected, and who know these areas best. British Waterways knows Fish Legal represents some of the clubs affected. We should be included in these discussions.”

John Hall of Bilston Angling Club added, “local canal anglers are absolutely disgusted with how this has been dealt with and match angling has been completely disrupted. British Waterways has previously refused to speak to us about the pollution”

Peter Gough of Wolverhampton Angling Association is similarly frustrated: “British Waterways and Severn Trent seem to have come to some sort of agreement which we have not been involved with. Some promised restocking was not done, and I am not confident that it will now go ahead at all.”

It wasn’t until after the second hour of the match that it became clear that Samantha Perkins, fishing for Starlets AS was favourite to be this year’s Angling Trust Ladies Individual National Champion at the Maver Larford Lakes complex

Angling Trust Fishing NewsAngling Trust Fishing NewsDrawn on Peg 63 on the Chalet Bank with the wind almost straight at her, Samantha decided that she would feed a pellet waggler line as far out as the wind would comfortably allow . She loose fed pellets consistently 30 yards out and kept the feed going in on this line for most of the match. Should the waggler method dry up,  she planned to use a straight lead, dropped onto the same line whilst still loose feeding pellets to try and draw the fish up in the water again. Alternating these two methods for most of the match, she finished with a total weight of 38Kgs 260grms made up of mostly carp to 7 Kgs to deservedly receive the gold medal. A further bonus on top of the Individual Title for Samantha was that Phil Briscoe, Managing Director of Maver (U.K), had said to her before the start of the match, that if she won the National Championship he would give her an individual sponsorship deal.

In second place drawn on Peg 26 on the Burr bank, was Julie Abbott, also fishing for Starlets A. S.

Julie opted to fish the method feeder for most of the match, finishing with carp and skimmers for a total weight of 30Kgs 40grms. Third place went to Samantha Sim fishing for Sonubait Passies Pond, with a weight of 21Kgs 840grms, drawn on Peg 66, with Wendy Locker fishing for Warrington Anglers Association Gold in fourth place with a weight of 20Kgs 260grms.

The top eight ladies will once again be invited to fish the Ladies event at the Fish ‘O’ Mania final.

The Specimen Lake at the prolific Maver Larford Lakes complex was chosen as the venue for this year’s Ladies National Individual and Team Championship. 61 competitors took part and caught a wide range of fish including carp, skimmers, bream, tench, roach and perch.

The weather conditions weren’t perfect, with a slightly chilly and gusting north easterly wind blowing, which meant that those that drew on the Chalet bank would have the wind almost in their faces and those on the Burr bank would have it off their backs.

The match started very slowly with very few fish being caught in the first hour and this set the tone for the remainder of the match and also meant that it was wide open as to who would win.

On the team front, with 10 teams entered, the winners were Starlets A. S, Samantha Perkins (38Kgs 260grms), Julie Abbott (30Kgs 40grms), Helen Dagnall (3Kgs 140grms), and Claire Dagnall (7kgs 660grms), giving them a total weight of 79Kgs 100grms. Doncaster and District A. A. put in a huge effort to take second place with a team comprising, Linda Bell (6Kgs 860grms), Ann Yates (15Kgs 640grms), Emma Pickering (17Kgs 520grms) and Sandra Scotthorne (10Kgs 800grms) and a total weight of 50Kgs 820grms. In third place was Warrington AA Gold, Wendy Locker, Linda Cooke, Rosemarie Balcomb and Pat Geary with 48k 420grms.

The Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifiers reached the halfway stage on Saturday at the highly regarded Stafford Moor Fishery in North Devon. Tim Bull (Dynamite Baits) aged 39 years, a Business Development Manager from Leamington is the eighth qualifier to join the line up for the Fish ‘O’ Mania final with a winning weight of 138-8-0 of Carp from Tanners 2. Tim picked up some useful information at Stafford Moor before the match and was told that Tanners would be the lake to draw as favourite in the conditions.

Fish O Mania 2010Unfortunately for Tim it was not plain sailing as he had quite a steady start catching smaller carp of around the 3 lb mark in the first hour or more, using a straight three/eighth ounce bomb with an 11 ml Dynamite XL pellet lassoed on his basic rig. Tim cast about 40 yards towards the far bank but the big key was to pick his moments when the wind died down to feed. As he went into the second hour the carp got bigger, but there were longer intervals between the bites. However, with careful feeding and fish of around the 7 lb mark he was building up a good weight. At the end of five hours Tim had around twenty-eight carp for his win and produced the biggest margin victory of all the qualifiers, this year, to date. After a few years of trying Tim has been very close on a couple of occasions but he will be competing in the final at Cudmore in July for the first time where he obviously hopes to emulate his brother the top commercial angler, Mick Bull who won the Fish 'O' Mania final in 2008.

Tim Bull (Dynamite Baits)With Tanners dominating this event local angler Mark Hayman (Stafford Moor) used his experience on the venue to make the most of his peg Tanners 34 draw, catching carp to 10 lb in his 84-2-0 of carp, with tactics being bomb and pellet. In third place from Tanners 6 was Trevor Senior (Vespe Army) from Salisbury with a weight of 76-4-0. Harry Marsh (Maver Farnborough) from Reading took fourth place from last year’s winning peg Tanners 18 with a weight of 73-2-0. In fifth place from peg Woodpecker 21 with 70-1-0 was one of last year’s finalists Andy Power (Preston Innovations Thatchers) from Wells Somerset.

The conditions on the day were not ideal, cold and overcast with rain forecast for later in the day. The weather played a big part in the results, with many anglers who were catching from the start seeing their swims die after a few hours as the wind moved the fish around and pushed them on to the pegs that had not had such a good start. In the end the result was a close run thing, all through the day the predictions were changing from one peg to another and into the final hour it could have gone either way between the top 5 anglers. Tim made the most of his peg and took his chances to leap ahead and win as it turned out quite comfortably, with the other four places separated by 4 or 5 fish.

All three of the main Westminster political parties have now signed the Angling Trust’s Angling Manifesto. The document sets out a detailed agenda for the next Parliament to protect and improve angling and fisheries and to acknowledge the economic, environmental and social benefits that the country’s most popular pursuit offers to the British people.

Angling Trust Fishing NewsSigned copies of the Manifesto have been received at the Angling Trust offices from Richard Benyon (Conservative), Huw Irranca-Davies (Labour) and Andrew George (Liberal Democrat).

The Angling Trust’s Manifesto for Angling, available in full on the Angling Trust web site, calls on the next Government to promote angling, recognise the rights of anglers and create healthy angling environments.

Richard Benyon said: “The Conservative Party are happy to be signing up to the Angling Trust’s Manifesto for Angling. David Cameron and the Conservative Party are firm supporters of angling and see anglers as being on the front line of the battle to improve the natural environment and our country’s biodiversity. We value our relationship with the Angling Trust and will continue to work closely with them and all representative bodies to improve the quality of our rivers and waterways and encourage more people to go fishing.”

Huw Irranca-Davies said: “I am pleased to confirm that the Labour Party signs up to the Manifesto for Angling, building on the excellent relationship we have enjoyed with the Angling Trust and with recreational anglers across the country, which we know will continue for many years ahead. We value the contribution of the millions of anglers to our society, economy and environment, and the broad principles outlined in your manifesto are a great basis for a continuing and active partnership.”

Andrew George said: “Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats are pleased to be able to support the Angling Trust’s 2010 Manifesto. We recognise angling is a hugely popular pastime which delivers important conservation and economic benefits. We're absolutely committed to working closely with the representative organisations of the sport in order to maximise the benefits of angling.”

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust said: “We are delighted that the Angling Trust has achieved consensus amongst our politicians that our sport is positive and beneficial and that angling – and the environment on which it depends – must be protected and improved. We will of course be holding them to these commitments in the new Parliament.”
