Update: 1st October 2012
Due to a major pollution incident on the Erewash Canal in Derbyshire the National Angling Match due to take place on the 13 October along this stretch of waterway will be postponed until 2013.

A major fire broke out at the Stanton IronWorks site located alongside the canal in Stanton-by–Dale which has resulted in pollutants entering into the canal causing a sudden decline in oxygen levels. The Environment Agency and Canal & River Trust are on site carrying out an emergency fish rescue and are currently transferring the fish to unaffected areas further along the canal. Whilst the rescue has been a great success with over 5000lbs of fish being safely relocated elsewhere on the canal sadly there have been some fish deaths as a result of the pollution.

John Ellis, Fisheries & Angling Manager from the Canal & River Trust said “I am really sorry to disappoint anyone who was planning to come along but in light of this incident we have taken the difficult decision to postpone the fishing match. The pollution site is not far from the area where we were planning on holding the angling match and we need to allow the fish population time to naturally recover and re-populate areas of the waterway”

To help celebrate the launch of the new waterways charity, the Canal & River Trust, a National Angling Match is being held along the Erewash Canal in Derbyshire on Saturday 13 October from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

Canal and River TrustThe match, which is open to anglers of all ages and abilities, is a chance for anglers from across the waterways to come together and compete against each other in this one off competition to celebrate our canal network.

Angling on Britain’s canals and rivers is more popular than ever with around 290 angling clubs established across the 2,000 mile network.

John Ellis National Fisheries & Angling Manager from the Canal & River Trust said “This match is a great opportunity for other anglers to compete with other club members and help celebrate the launch of the Canal & River Trust. The all day match is open to all keen anglers and clubs should be a competitive but fun day”

The match will be along a stretch of the Erewash canal from Ilkeston to Long Eaton which is a distance of about six miles and is home to a wide variety of fish. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish including Roach, Perch, Bream, Chub and Bonus Tench.

David Kent, Chair of the National Angling Advisor Group “We wanted to do something to get anglers involved in the launch of the Canal & River Trust and what better way than to hold a National Angling competition. We have 400 pegs available and I expect there to be a great response from the angling community so I urge anyone interested in coming along to arrive early to avoid disappointment”

The competition will be divided into three groups; under 16’s, teams of four and individual matches. Entry fees are £20 per team and £15 for individuals. To book your place in the competition please contact Alan Wright on 0115 9728041 or John Johnson on 07931 552691

The Golden Balls team strike their rods to success yet again!
That’s right anglers, it’s that time of year again for the famous golden balls charity event at Hawkhurst fish farm, Kent. 76 carp and match anglers including children from the age of 10, took to the lakes 12th-13th September to try and catch as many fish as they could in order to win the famous GB trophy and raise money for the Cancer Research UK charity.

The event included four separate matches of 1 junior match, 2 senior matches and 1 24 hour carp match over the two days. This years matches were all organised by the golden balls committee, where 12 juniors competed side by side in their match for 6 Hours. … So how did they get on?

1st     George Bolt     44lbs
2nd      Ross Macauley     42lbs 10oz
3rd     Ash Cornish     26lb

Whilst the juniors were competing, the first senior match also made a start at 9.00 am. Dave Sage came in 1st place on Saturday’s match having a total weight of 156.9 lbs. so how did the runners up do?
1st     Dave Sage     156.9 lbs
2nd     Vic Elmer     148.0 lbs
3rd     Daren Chaston     126.12 lbs

As the sun went down, and a new day arises the second senior match got on the way. With the cloudy skys holding off the rain Paul Lamb came in fist place with the following not too far behind him:

1st     Paul Lamb     148.3 lbs
2nd     P Ollernshaw     114.14 lbs
3rd     Mark Breckall     110.4 lbs

So after these successful three matches, how were the anglers getting on in the 24 hour carp match that started on Saturday at 12pm…with the eager anglers getting their rods in and their bait scattered all round their swims, Ashley Izzard got the reel spinning catching the first fish in the match automatically taking him to the lead with a 10lb carp. But as the night drew nearer the real excitement started. The specimen lake became very popular with Daniel Warren catching a 26lb mirror and Dale Cassell catching a 29 lbs not too far behind him. So who was the lucky angler to win the famous golden balls trophy?

1st     Dale Cassell     55lb 10oz
2nd     Ashley Izzard     43lb 8oz
3rd     Frank Wheeler     31lb

Heaviest fish trophy sponsored by rigmarole also went to Dale Cassell of 29lb 2oz.

So up to the marquee for the famous raffle, presentations and grand total to be announced, all the match and carp anglers including juniors had their raffle tickets ready and braced themselves to hear that magic total they helped raise go towards Cancer Research UK. There was an overwhelming number of prizes donated for the raffle, and tombola that also took part during the day times over the weekend. The raffle wouldn't have been so successful if it wasn’t for our generous sponsors (see below). These were very much appreciated by all the golden balls team and organisers, not to mention the lucky winners who won fantastic holidays ranging from a weeks fishing holiday at Sky Lakes to a wide range of fishing equipment from Fox, Warriors and so on.

The golden balls committee along with Cancer Research UK representative Helen Waters and David and Wendy Dukes (Mayor of Tunbridge Wells) addressed the eager crowd who all took part, how much they had finally raised. The honour was left to Ben Wilkinson to announce the grand total of £17,500 as all their faces lit up with pride, from raising such an outstanding figure for the one event. What an amazing achievement and have to take our hats off to all that played a part in yet another successful weekend. Speaking to Barry Cale the founder of golden balls charity moments after said he was very thankful to everyone that took part and couldn’t believe how much they had still managed to raise with the current climate.

This is now the 4th golden balls charity event he has organised with his committee to be at the amazing grounds of Hawkhurst fisheries, Kent. Barry and his family including two daughters Stacie Hudson and Hayley Cale who also arrange their own yearly charity events based around dancing would personally like to thank everyone who played a part in the event, from people simply buying raffle tickets to our wonderful marshals Tony the tench, John Crundwell and Will Izzard. They all deserve praise for giving us their time and effort over the weekend. Not to forget our great number of sponsors and Hawkhurst fish farm for letting us use their complex. None of this could have been so successful without them, and it’s great to know all the money raised will help find a cure for the disease that effects so many of us.

Golden Balls Carp & Match Charity Fundraiser for Cancer Research UK.

Now if you haven’t heard of the Golden Boll**** charity fund raiser, please take the time to read this article as it will no doubt fill you with inspiration and warmth especially when most things in the world at the moment seem to all doom and gloom.

After last years outstanding achievement in raising just under 21k, the guys and girls behind this incredible event made sure that they didn’t loose any momentum and quickly set up a committee in order to get the best organization and support they could for all involved.

The event was to be held at the magnificent Hawkhurst Fisheries Kent over the weekend of the 27th/28th of September with a slightly different format to last year’s event

This years event included four separate matches two Match competitions a Junior Match Competition and one 24hr Carp Match, bringing together some of the best anglers out there of all ages some as young as 10 years old.

I don’t know of any other kind of charity event that brings the world of Match Angling and Carp Angling together for one joint goal in mind - to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK.

This year’s match competitions were organised by the one and only Tetly and I might add a number of the Musketeers Angling boys too. With a vast mix of talent on display the nets were quickly wet and the numbers of fish being landed from all over the lake soon started to stack up. There seemed to be more of an element of banter in this year’s match it soon became apparent that the anglers were in a three way battle for the medals and the rest not to mention any names found more time for verbal exchanges regarding each others angling ability, nether the less day one turned out to be a very exciting match indeed.

Here’s how day one panned out on the Match Lake

  • 1st Mark Greenway 136-14
  • 2nd Keith Pelling 134-00
  • 3rd Darren Chaston 129-04

Now attention turned to the carp boys and girls including a newly wed couple spending their honey moon raising money for the cause (hats off to them). For those of you that are not familiar with the Golden Boll***** rules regarding the draw, it’s very simple who ever raises the most cash gets the honours, a fair deal if you ask me!. The match was held on all three lakes, the Main Lake, the Dove Lake and the Specimen Lake.

Really if you think you can raise a shed load of money get in touch with the team and put your case forward for next years match you never know you might walk away with the coveted Golden Boll**** trophy and of course the most important thing knowing you did a very great thing in supporting the event.

Well after last year the match anglers embarrassing the carp anglers it was time to get even, the bait was ready the traps were set the hooter had gone and what would happen, you could of heard a pin drop not a buzzer or a liner nothing. Once again the smiles from the match boys told a telling tale, the carp anglers set in for the long wait as the heat and the high pressure put pay to the carps feeding habits.

Although the fishing wasn’t as highly contested as the match guys it still went right up to the wire with Karen Dyer (newly wed) leading at one point with 18.4oz Until the Dutch destroyer Edwin Werters landed a whacker of 26.6 from the Specimen Lake, last years winner and match organizer Frank Wheeler couldn’t add to his total of 16.40z, and that’s how it remained. A valiant effort from the anglers that took part in the match and a remarkable amount of money rose to add to the total.

By now the total had started to tot up quite nicely, especially as Wendy and the girls had the set up camp in the front car park tempting passers by with raffle tickets tom bola and of course the magnificent hog roast, still the pressure was on to top last years total, would we do it?

Carp Match Results

  • 1st Edwin Werters – 26.6
  • 2nd Karen Dyer – 18.4
  • 3rd Frank Wheeler – 16.4

A Massive thank you to all the following guys for organising the junior match which saw some cracking fish landed, Tetly, Martin Wombell, Lee Reed, Dave Sage, Keith Pelling and Steve Kelly. The juniors played their part with enthusiasm and determination no matter how small some of the fish were they all counted, check out these pics from juniors match

Sunday Match Junior Winners

  • 1st Kieran Sage - 17.04oz
  • 2nd Ben Goldsmith – 12.7oz
  • 3rd Kieran Finn – 12.04oz

Sunday Match ADULT Angler results

  • 1st Peter Allen - 195.08oz
  • 2nd Nick Allen – 177.08oz
  • 3rd Darren Law – 160.04oz

Well done to all the match Guys!

As all the match and carp anglers gathered around the Marquee in the presence of Cancer research reps Joyce, Nurses venue owner Tony Wilkinson, Barry Cale addressed the eager crowd and so to the part everyone was waiting for, the total, what would it be?

But before we get to the total, we still had the auction to take place up stood Simon with his cheeky grin to auction off some very exciting items indeed to help push the funds as high as possible, notably a rather fetching set of ladies camouflaged undies with Golden Balls logo.

So back to the total, would we reach the dizzy heights of last year, the honours were left to Tony Wilkinson nerves were jangling as he said nothing and scratched his “well I honestly didn’t think you would reach last years efforts but I am glad to say that you all have done an amazing job and you have raised ...

£21,500

What an amazing effort from all involved, a quite outstanding achievement yet again.

Speaking to Barry moments after he told me that again it hadn’t quite sunk in how much they had actually raised. He was so proud to be involved in this event and how much depended in the help of every single person that had been involved in any way, the army of Golden Balls camo t-shirted fundraisers had blown him away with their efforts.

Barry, Wendy his family and the committee would like to thank anyone who played a part in helping to raise this staggering amount. Tony Wilkinson who provided an excellent venue and support from the outset, Justin at the Fresh Water Informer for all the press, and Cancer Research UK for their help in running the smooth admin. Every single angler that took part in the competition and the marshal’s that gave up their time that all deserve praise for their efforts!

Personally I would like to congratulate everyone on organising a unique and heart warming event where the angling community came together for a great cause, helping to find a cure or at least aid the suffering of others battling with this disease.

Where would we be with out our sponsors, your support is such an important part of what we are trying to achieve.

This is with out doubt the one of the largest charity angling fund raisers on the calendar and I am asking all major manufactures, Shops and corporate companies to get in touch with us and commit to supporting us in any way you can, if you think you can help in any way please drop me a mail to arron@carpbible.com

Well done to every one and good luck for next year.

MATCH FISHING - By Ergo

It’s time to put your fishing skills to use and bring home some coin – but what steps need to be taken to get on the match-fishing ladder? Ergo reveals the info you’ll need...

Many pole anglers spend countless hours bashing away at their local venues. But what if you could actually make some money from it? Well, many anglers have the same thought week in, week out and when it comes to fishing a competitive match the world is your oyster.

The first decision you must make is what kind of match you want to enter. Generally, club matches are best for the match fishing ‘virgin’ because they allow you to sample competition fishing but on a small scale and with less risk to your wallet. There are literally hundreds of clubs around the UK and the chances are you’ll be in the catchment area of a dozen or so just sat where you are. Above anything else, club matches are all about anglers getting together for fun. However, the fun element doesn’t mean that the matches will be no good. On the contrary, clubs often have regular matches on some of the best waters around the UK and will offer the beginner to match fishing a chance to fish well-known venues without having to face the open-match regulars who are highly skilled.

Match fishing by ErgoThe other alternative is to go straight into open matches. Opens bring together the cream of match fishing, whether it’s from the local circuit or anglers who travel from far and wide. The major pitfall here is that you will generally be up against the best that match fishing has to offer. Those who do compete will be familiar with every peg, technique and opportunity that arises, making them very hard to beat. On the plus side, payouts are much higher and the purse for a winning angler can be in the hundreds of pounds, rather than the £50 or so you’ll win from a 25-peg club match. The basic fact to remember is to choose a match on a venue that you will feel comfortable fishing. If you’re a canal angler who rarely fishes for carp, then it may be too big a step to jump straight into a circuit based on the major commercial venues of this world. Instead, why not stick to what you are good at, be it canals, rivers or carping. If you are moving into an area that’s unfamiliar to you, then practise – after all, it will save you money in the long run.

The qualities of the field and the venue aren’t the only factors to consider though. Location and entry cost are two that can’t be overlooked. Don’t travel too far because:

a.. It is daunting to travel 100 miles or so, because those nerves will have time to build up and,
b.. You may not be able to do the journey regularly, leaving you up in the air as to whether you’ll get to grips with a venue.

Also, cost has to be taken into account. Tot up your petrol, entry cost and bait bill before you start and work out whether it will be a viable option.

The weekly angling press is the best place to start when choosing a match. There are many opens run every weekend and also through the week. If you are a member of a club, then your club newsletter will let you know the where's and the when's, making it a much easier prospect to get fishing. All in all, match fishing can be a rewarding experience, whether it’s serious open fishing or the more relaxed atmosphere of a local club.

Whatever the match, enjoy the fishing! Remember...

a.. Set your goal. Is it the money that’s your motivation or just the kudos of beating other anglers?
b.. The weeklies are your guides to the matches to be held over the coming week. Read the match reports and make your mind up from there.
c.. Join a club. Club fishing is the most popular form of match fishing and it’s easy to see why – high turnouts, affordable entry fees and the emphasis on fun.
d.. Stick to what you know. Don’t jump feet first into a match that you know you’ll do badly in. Instead, use your skills as your strength and fish matches on similar venues to those you regularly frequent.
e.. If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Make sure you cover every eventuality with regard to rigs, bait and even down to filling the car up with petrol – it’s no good if everything else is perfect but your car runs out of fuel on the way!

Review:
I have been thinking about getting a new landing net for a while now so you can imagine how delighted I was to receive this quality carp match net from Middy recently.

I don't do any match fishing, although unlike some of our carp fishing friends, I am more than happy to sit all day catching small roach, skimmers F1s etc. This is where a net like this comes in real handy. Big, heavy carp nets are too big for this type of fishing and a smaller net like this Middy landing net which is tough but very light, makes landing smaller fish a doddle. No more aching arms at the end of a session.

As you would expect from Middy, this match landing net is well constructed to high standards and should last for many seasons of fishing. I'm not sure the camo design serves any practical function although it will defintely appeal to the camo lovers out there.

Finally, with fish care high on the agenda these days, it is essential to use nets that are fish friendly. This middy net carries the fish friendly kite mark of assurance and complies with Environment Agency Bylaw 12.

All in all I give the Middy Rock 'Ard Camo Match Carp Net a big thumbs up. A quality" product as always from Middy.

Wood Lane Farm Fishery, Iver, Buckinghamshire

Its always a pleasure to try out a brand new fishery. That sense of the unknown just adds to the excitement you already feel when going fishing. Well that was definitely the case today. Jenny had spied a sign to Wood Lane Farm Fishery on her way back from work one day and had been suggesting we try it for some weeks now. Then funnily enough, Nigel Laughton [check his pics out in the gallery] sent Fish South East an email explaining about Wood Lane Farm and the fishing on offer there.

When we arrived, it was, as luck would have it, pouring with rain. After a brief stint sheltering in the car, the skies started to brighten and we were on !! Wood Lane farm consists of two coarse fishing lakes. The larger lake is the match lake and is probably around 3-4 acres with I'd say room for about 20-30 swims. It is pretty featureless and exposed. The smaller lake is more sheltered with swims seperated from each other by tress and bushes, giving it more of a secluded feel. I guess its around half the size of the match lake. I was "reliably" informed that 4 hour matches on the match lake have already been won with weights approaching 200lb and that the second lake holds carp to 30lb. One word of warning - because the fishery is fairly new, the owner hasn't built proper swims/pegs yet, and as some of the banks are fairly steep, care needs to be taken, especially in the wet.

Wood Lane match lake is stuffed full of carp to around 2lbSo enough of this waffle - was the fishing any good you want to know, right? Well in a nutshell, yes it was good. We made a start on the match lake fishing the far bank near the three big trees and it soon became apparent that the lake was absolutely stuffed full of fish. We caught an endless stream of roach, skimmers, chublets, tench and hard fighting carp up to about 2lb. Everthing was on the small side but we had great fun on light tackle and the action was non stop. Sweetcorn, pellets and meat all seemed to gobbled up with equal relish by the hungry fish. They won't stay small for long!

Having sent a few hectic hours on the match lake, we decided to try our luck on the second lake. We chose a swim in the left hand corner of the lake where it looked like there would be some likely fish holding spots. It was pretty evident right from the off that the second lake was very well stocked too and straight away we were catching ths same fish as in the match lake although on the slightly larger size. The weather gods decided to ruin our fun shortly after that so we decided to call it day.

Superb condition fish at Wood LaneWood lane Farm is located about 500 metres down Wood Lane on the left hand side as you approach form Iver. Prices are £10 per day and you must use barbless hooks, dip nets and you cannot use groundbait, boilies and nuts. Despite these restrictions, I would suggest that once the owner has made the venue a bit more access friendly [forget it at present if you are disabled], this will be a cracking venue and will become very popular. So give it a go while you can still get a swim.

Til next time, happy fishing!! Paul @ UK Fisherman
