The Angling Trust has welcomed the commitment from the Environment Agency (EA) to deliver an ambitious 5-Point Approach to halt the dramatic decline of salmon stocks in England.

Angling Trust fishing newsDespite funding cuts from government, the Agency has committed additional funding to support this extensive programme of work over an 18-month period.

The approach aims to address five key issues affecting salmon stocks:

  • improving marine survival, which has decreased by almost 50% in 20 years;
  • reducing the impact of both commercial and recreational fisheries and in particular phasing out mixed stock netting;
  • finding fish passage solutions to mitigate the impacts of man-made barriers to migration, improving river habitat and tackling predation from fish-eating birds;
  • safeguarding sufficient flows;
  • reducing agricultural pollution to improve water quality and maximise spawning success.

This move follows intense pressure by the Angling Trust on Ministers and Environment Agency officials through the ‘Save our Salmon’ campaign for immediate government action to save rapidly declining salmon populations. The Angling Trust was voted to head the campaign by readers of Trout and Salmon magazine in 2015.

The most recently (2014) published assessments of salmon stocks in England and Wales by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) showed further declines from previous surveys to the lowest numbers on record.  With at least 900 full time jobs supported by recreational salmon angling and hundreds of millions of pounds worth of fishery rights dependent on fish stocks it is imperative that drastic action is taken now.

The EA acknowledges that restoring salmon stocks is not a feasible task for a single organisation; rather a co-ordinated approach is required involving action from wider government and partners.  Consequently, the Salmon Five Point Approach is a partnership initiative involving Defra and a range of partners including the Angling Trust and Fish Legal, the Atlantic Salmon Trust, The Rivers Trust, and Salmon and Trout Conservation UK, who will all play a role in delivering on specific objectives.

The Angling Trust, as the national representative and governing body for angling in England, will be providing recommendations to reduce the impact of recreational rod angling on salmon by voluntary measures on a river-by-river basis to avoid the threatened imposition of mandatory catch and release. The Trust will be developing and implementing a proposal to secure private sector support for enforcement by volunteers and to help fund the buy-out of nets.  It will also be continuing the ongoing work with its Fisheries Management Advisors to promote more effective control of predation from cormorants and goosanders.

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust and Fish Legal,  said: “We are pleased to see this comprehensive and detailed response from the Environment Agency to the Save Our Salmon campaign that the Angling Trust launched last year. The real test will be whether these fine words are converted into a really comprehensive change in the way that we manage the many pressures on salmon stocks.  Anglers will play their part, but it is vital that other Defra agencies and branches of government take action if the 5-point approach is to be successful. The Angling Trust & Fish Legal will continue to campaign and if necessary take legal action to ensure that the protection of these magnificent fish is taken much more seriously at all levels of government.”

Temple regular Gary Brown has just banked one of the most sort after prized fish in Temple, ‘The Ghost’ weighing a whopping 39lb 2oz. In immaculate condition, a number of anglers witnessed the catch as well as Bury Hill’s fishery manager Chris Wilmott. Part way through his session, Gary has also banked a cracking 28lb 14oz common and with a slow increase in temperatures, Gary is hopeful of another fish or two before his session ends!

Other recent Temple catches include Mike Goddard’s stunning 28lb 12oz mirror, Temple supremo Matt White's 25lb 10oz mirror, Dean Rogers 25lb 1oz mirror and Bury Hill Bailiff Clive Elson's 24lb 2oz mirror.

Another angler to catch recently was Stuart Mountjoy who caught four fish, a 25lb 6oz mirror, 22lb 2oz common, 19lb common and 18lb 4oz mirror. Interestingly, Stuart was fishing two different baits but all of his fish came to the S-Core rod. When Stuart packed up he gave his left over S-Core bait to Kevin Nash who was fishing close by, Kevin immediately swopped his rods over to the S-Core bait very quickly landing a cracking brace of mirrors weighing 28lb 12oz and 24lb. Needless to say we are now stocking the Richworth S-Core in the shop, anyone using it please let us know how you get on.

Angling Trust fishing newsRetaining their places from last year are; Alex Clements, Matt Barnett and Rory Jones while Bradley Gibbons will also feature as he progresses from the U18s.  The fifth and final place in the squad goes to Sheffield’s Ricky Marshall who will win his first England cap.

The team are;
Alex Clements, Southampton

Bradley Gibbons, Berkshire
Matt Barnett, Hampshire
Ricky Marshall, Sheffield

Coruche on the River Sorraia is a notoriously difficult venue for England Teams.  The under 18s and under 23s have only one team bronze medal in their last two  visits to the venue so  the team will be looking to improve upon that record in 2016.  It is expected that barbel on the waggler and bleak and borga on the pole, plus the occasional Carassio and mullet will be the target species.

Mark Downes, Drennan U23s England Manager stated

Mark this year will be joined by Darran Bickerton as his Assistant Coach.  Darran has a wealth of experience and is well travelled.  Mark said “tactically Darran is superb, and his attention to detail when it comes to preparation is meticulous, along with myself we will leave no stone unturned.”

130 competitors gathered at the picturesque Hayfield Lakes, Doncaster on Saturday 12th March 2016 for the third Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier on a cool misty morning. The fishery had recovered well after the recent heavy rains and although there was a cool south easterly breeze blowing the weather looked set fair. Recent 200 lb weights on this venue added to the expectation of a good days fishing.

Angling Trust fishing newsAs the match got under way, reality soon dawned that that the cool wind and was having an effect, with most anglers struggling for early bites in the conditions. As last year, the aerator on Little Adams had a fair number of carp around it, and those anglers who could fire a pellet waggler close to it started to catch fish.

Alex Lill and James Stones on pegs 31 and 32 respectively had the breeze behind them and were soon catching carp, as did pegs 16, 17 and 18 opposite. Chris Kitchin on peg 17 where last year’s winner came from seemed to be taking an early lead, fishing close to the aerator with his pellet waggler set between 5 and 6 feet deep.

Meanwhile many anglers were struggling for bites, with fish only showing in tight pockets. Those in  the high 50’s on Dannie’s had such a pocket of fish and early reports showed a close contest was developing, with Marc Rodger, Shaun Sanders, Andy Oldham, Andy Butler and Jason Smith all catching carp on pellet waggler . Others on Dannie’s were finding the going tough.

Adam Playford and Ryan Bennett were catching a few carp on 12 and 13, but didn’t look to be a treat to those in the 50’s. Big Adams told the same story with Lynden Grimmett, Steve Cooke and Geoff Keeling amongst the few to be catching odd carp.
It was clear that the carp were hanging in mid water, and those with carp coming to pellet waggler found that a change to pop up boilie fished at up to 5 feet off the bottom would bring in a few extra fish.  Paul Christie on Adams 16 netted 3 decent carp in consecutive casts on this method to give Chris Kitchin on peg 17 something to think about.  Chris, however carried on catching carp to 10lb on 8 and 10mm pellets, despite having difficulty reaching the aerator with his feed as the wind had picked up.

Shaun Sanders, Andy Oldham and Jason Smith in the 50’s on Dannie’s were in close competition too, with Jason Smith edging ahead to finish with 89 lb and second overall. Andy Oldham was close behind with 74-8 for third place, and Shaun Sanders weighed in 67-15 for fifth.

On Adams Alex Lill had 73-14; 10 lb more than the next peg James Stones, giving Alex 4th place. Opposite these two, the battle was won by Chris Kitchin on peg 17. The civil servant from Leeds put 97-12 of carp to 10lb to win the match outright and take the third qualifying place for the Fish ’O’ Mania final in July. Chris was especially delighted to qualify, and the day erased the bad memory of the previous Wednesday, when a 500 mile round trip to Viaduct only yielded a blank!

Despite some disappointingly low weights, where many anglers failed to weigh in, Hayfield showed it’s potential as a well maintained and well managed venue where better weather conditions and warmer water temperatures would give considerably better results.

Thanks go to Robin and the enigmatic Noelie for a friendly and colourful atmosphere, and good luck to competitors hoping to emulate Chris on the next qualifier at Solhampton on Saturday 19th March.

The 150 competitors arriving for the first Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier of 2016 were greeted by scattered snow showers and a biting North Easterly wind at Tunnel Barn Farm in Shrewley, Warwickshire on Saturday 5th March.

Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier of 2016For many, this resulted in a hard day's fishing. However, as temperatures rose and with the wind dropping a little, alongside some sunshine going into the last hour of the match, the venue's shoals of carp and F1s fed remarkably well.

It was Jamie Hughes, an Angling Coach from the Wirral, who was installed immediately as favourite when he drew end peg 2 on Canal pool. He didn’t disappoint either, winning the event easily with 141lbs and being the first qualifier for Fish ‘O’ Mania 2016. Amazingly, his catch of 50 fish - carp and F1s up to 8lbs - were caught dobbing bread punch to a series of lines without feeding any bait at all for four hours of the match, and even then 40 maggots was the total bait used.

Canal pool was the place to be and further along the bank on pegs 6 and 8 Andrew Mann and Andrew Neal – Wales-based travelling partners and stable mates under the Milo Bait Tech banner – fought out a peg-to-peg battle. It was Andrew Mann who came out on top catching 83lbs 14oz of carp and F1s across and short, using the same dobbing bread and maggots short tactics as the winner down the edge with Andy Neal also fishing the same and finishing in third with 65lbs 8oz.

The second Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier moves to Viaduct Fishery, Somerset on Wednesday 9th March 2016.
