Roger Holmes became the Angling Trust Veterans National Champion on Wednesday 5th August at Makins Fishery at Wolvey Warwickshire with an exceptional winning weight of 52.350kg fishing Phase 1, Lake 2 on peg A14.
Roger’s tactics were to fish pellet and waggler feed on 8mm pellets. Roger who usually fishes for Nottingham AA caught mainly mirror Carp with the odd ghost and common carp. Roger dominated the day’s fishing to take the gold medal home to Nottinghamshire.
Makins is well established with Mirror and ghost carp, bream and tench. Phase 1 dominated the match with it’s outstanding weights with ten out of the first twelve anglers fishing this lake. Conditions didn’t dampen any spirits with bad rain setting in until just after the start of the match, then again during the first hour, and glorious sunshine and tropical weather setting in for the rest of the day.
In runner up position was Peter Shrigley, who fished Phase 2, Crater Lake on peg 13, who got another outstanding weight of 47.300kg. Peter unfortunately lost 12 fish during the match, but went on to catch 40 carp, 3 tench and 1 skimmer on pellet and paste method.
As well as coming in first place and runner up positions Roger and Peter went on to become silver medallist winners on the day taking home another medal each.
In bronze medal position was Dave Rossi on peg 21, Phase 1, Lake 4 with a weight of 44.300kg. Dave stated, “It’s the first time I’ve fished this particular lake, but have fished Makins Fishery many times.” Dave fished on the method feeder all day catching 4 bream and the rest of the catch being carp.
