To help celebrate the launch of the new waterways charity, the Canal & River Trust, a National Angling Match is being held along the Erewash Canal in Derbyshire on Saturday 13 October from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

The match, which is open to anglers of all ages and abilities, is a chance for anglers from across the waterways to come together and compete against each other in this one off competition to celebrate our canal network.

Angling on Britain’s canals and rivers is more popular than ever with around 290 angling clubs established across the 2,000 mile network.

John Ellis National Fisheries & Angling Manager from the Canal & River Trust said “This match is a great opportunity for other anglers to compete with other club members and help celebrate the launch of the Canal & River Trust. The all day match is open to all keen anglers and clubs should be a competitive but fun day”

The match will be along a stretch of the Erewash canal from Ilkeston to Long Eaton which is a distance of about six miles and is home to a wide variety of fish. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish including Roach, Perch, Bream, Chub and Bonus Tench.

Heavy rain over the weekend led to London’s sewerage system overflowing into the river. Because the spill followed a long dry spell, the sewage was particularly noxious. More than 250,000 tonnes of storm sewage entered the river from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and at least 200,000 tonnes from the Mogden Sewage Treatment Works in Isleworth, which is currently being upgraded.

The Environment Agency is monitoring oxygen levels in the river and Thames Water has dosed the polluted water with hydrogen peroxide to add oxygen to the water. The company’s oxygenation vessels have also been deployed to the area.

Anglers and environmental campaigners have been calling for decades for improvements to the capital’s sewerage network because of a series of similar incidents in recent years (notably in 2004 and 2009). Plans are now at last in place for a new ‘Super Sewer’ under the Thames which would prevent these spills happening, but completion of these works is still years away and could be threatened if funds are not made available or planning authorities stand in the way.

Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd said:

“It is heartbreaking to see so many young fish being repeatedly poisoned in sewage. We hope that incidents such as this will convince policy makers and London local authorities of the need for the Thames Tunnels scheme, which is vital for the future of the capital’s river.”

Thames Anglers’ Conservancy Chairman James Page said:

“Our rapid response crew were down on the beach as soon as this happened but they felt helpless to save the countless fish they could see gasping in the water’s edge.  Anglers and water bill payers alike need to see action to stop this happening in the future.”

Clubmark is a nationally recognised indicator of quality. The Sport England initiative enables Parents and Carers to identify those clubs who are committed to providing a safe, effective, child friendly environment where sport in this case Angling can take place. Over the past two years, the club has received  grants to allow club members to be trained as coaches and help pass on their knowledge and skills to local young people. Last year alone saw over 120 local pupils take part in free angling sessions with coaches from the club. Pupils who took part in the coaching sessions as novices in previous years are now undertaking Leadership and Volunteering training to help assist in the delivery of the sessions to new participants.

The clubs success has been driven by a group of highly committed volunteers, committed to giving the local community a safe, effective environment where Angling can take place. Being awarded Clubmark recognises the club as one of the leading Angling clubs not only in the county but also in the East Midlands.

Ifor’s tender was Severn Trent’s preferred bid and he told the Angling Trust:
“I will be encouraging young anglers by extending my ‘Kids go Free’ policy for those sharing an adult’s permit and catch limit and I am very keen to help support the Angling Trust’s England Youth Team at Draycote, Thornton and Foremark again this season.”

Ifor is well known for running Thornton Fishery successfully for nearly 30 years and has been Chairman of the Stillwater Trout Fisheries Association since 2008. He will be announcing detailed arrangements for the fishery shortly.

The Angling Trust has been working closely with Draycote Fly Fishers Association to campaign for the reservoir to re-open for fishing after it was suddenly closed without consultation by Severn Trent Water to make way for building works which in the event never went ahead.

Application forms have been sent to all who fished in trials last year, and are also available on the Angling Trust website at www.anglingtrust.net in the International Competitions section. The closing date for the England trial application forms has been extended and all forms must be completed and returned to the Angling Trust by no later than 12th May 2011 to be considered for trial.

Applicants must impress both Mark Downes and Steve Sanders, the England Youth Team Managers, who will once again be tasked with the search for the finest young talent this country can provide. Successful applicants will represent England in this year’s World Championships taking place in the World Angling Games in Italy from 28th August – 4th September 2011.

These trials will be pole only and Bloodworm, maggot, worms and sweetcorn will be the predominant baits.

Mark Downes, Drennan Team England U22’s Youth Team Manager stated "This year’s Youth Championships will be held in Calcanai, Italy along the River Arno which is a good venue full of Catfish, Carp and Carrassio. Steve Sanders and myself will be looking for talented youngsters who have the ability to fish under pressure and to international rules.”

All completed application forms including nominations plus references must be received by the Angling Trust by no later than 12th May 2011. Packington Somers Fisheries is considered one of the most successful and varied commercial coarse fisheries in the Midlands, if not the UK and is becoming a much sought after match fishing venue.

The England selection trial will be fished to international rules to help identify anglers who are of international calibre. The style to fish at international level is completely different to the way anglers would normally fish in this country, and each angler must have at least one handicap point which is based on their disability, with the full team requiring a minimum of 11 points in total to fish in the World Championships.

Joe Roberts, England Manager said “This trial will help assess each angler who is of international standard, and on the day I will be assessing each of the anglers’ disability ranging from one to six points for the highest classification. Trials such as this are important for team selection into the Internationals and will let us identify talented anglers”.

Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager said “It is imperative that we send the best team possible to the World Angling Games which will take place in Italy from 27th August – 4th September, and Joe Roberts and John Weedon (Manager) will need to look at as many anglers as possible. The unfortunate part is that we have not got a sponsor and the anglers selected will have to pay the full costs themselves”.

The Angling Trust is delighted to announce that it has secured the biggest cash injection into International Coarse angling in a generation, in the form of a very generous donation of £40,000 to support some of the International Coarse Angling teams. The teams will be U14s, Ladies, Veterans and Anglers with Disabilities. Durham based HV Power Electrical Systems have very generously offered to fund these teams after an appeal by the Angling Times in conjunction with Angling Trust.

Stuart Porter, Managing Director of HV Power Electrical, who is a keen angler, came forward to support this great cause after reading in the Angling Times that the teams did not have sponsorship to support them in fishing the International Championships. Stuart has also promised to offer a similar level of funding for the International teams to participate in 2011. Next year the teams will all be competing in all disciplines in Italy for the World Angling Games Championships, and with this new funding the Angling Trust can now create an U14s International team to participate in 2011.

This donation is without doubt one of the biggest that angling has ever received to support our English teams fishing overseas. Without this fantastic sponsorship from HV Power Electrical, these teams would not be able to participate as Angling Trust relies very heavily on sponsorship for teams to take part at international level.

Stuart Porter said “We are just ordinary blokes who want to put something back into angling. My business partner, Alan Hardy puts funding into his passion, greyhound racing, so I thought I should do my bit for my sport - angling”.

In recent year’s, because of money being injected into the sport, the European teams have begun to overtake the England teams in their results, but it is hoped with this fantastic donation that will now see all the English teams competing at the highest level in the future and coming back with even more medals.

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of Angling Trust stated “This is a great leap forward for Team England, and for angling as a whole. We’re also very grateful to Angling Times for publicising our appeal. Plans are currently being developed for the funding of all coarse, game and sea competition angling at an international level over the next decade”.

Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager said “this donation by the sport’s new benefactor will enable the teams to approach each contest in a more professional manner. England will now be in a position to compete at the highest level in the Veterans, Disabled and Ladies World Championships, after playing the poor relations to some of our European cousins for many years. The fantastic financial arrangement with HV Power Electrical Systems has guaranteed the involvement of these teams for the next few years, and I would personally like to thank Stuart and his company for their support. I am sure their generosity will enable us to win more medals.”

We will now also be looking at developing a system which will enable us to select a team of under 14's to compete at world level from next year”.

The Angling Trust today launched a campaign strategy to highlight the concerns of Britain’s 3 million anglers in the run-up to the General Election.

The comprehensive strategy includes calls for the government and its agencies to:

• Protect fish stocks from commercial overfishing by reforming the Common Fisheries Policy and enforcing existing legislation;
• Implement the Water Framework Directive to address diffuse pollution, low river flows and habitat damage;
• Allow greater controls of cormorants by anglers suffering excessive fish predation on their waters;
• Provide more accountability about how anglers’ £26million from freshwater rod licences is actually spent;
• Stop the march of non-native invasive species such as signal crayfish, giant hogweed and floating pennywort;
• Ensure that none of the thousands of new hydropower installations planned on our rivers damages fisheries;
• Protect the rights of anglers to go fishing and to access piers, ponds and to park near beaches;
• Support efforts to encourage more people to get into fishing;
• Protect fish from diseases imported from abroad.

Angling is more popular than ever, with freshwater rod licence sales soaring last year to 1.5 million from 1.3 million in the previous year. The Trust is aiming to sustain and continue this growth and ensure that there are plenty of fish to catch and safe and clean places for people of all ages to catch them.

Six Members of Parliament recently signed up as Parliamentary Supporters of the Angling Trust, the organisation which represents anglers in England, at a meeting of the All Party Angling Group at the House of Commons. The Group is chaired by Martin Salter MP (Reading West), a long-standing supporter of the Trust and the Labour party spokesman for angling and shooting and includes Richard Benyon (Newbury), the Conservatives' fisheries spokesman.

Anglers have reacted with dismay to the news that Severn Trent Water is to close Draycote Reservoir to all angling until further notice. Severn Trent claims that the closure is due to the planned redevelopment of the visitors’ centre at the reservoir, but planning permission has not yet been agreed for the work. The company is not restricting access to other users during the period of the works; sailing, birdwatching and walking will all still be allowed.

Anglers are very concerned that when the work is finished, the Company will stop angling on large parts of the reservoir, as they did at Foremark Reservoir early in 2009, for what were widely regarded as spurious ‘health and safety’ reasons.

Thousands of anglers fish the reservoir each year and they are furious that this decision was made without consultation – mirroring what happened at Foremark. Severn Trent makes much of the fact on its web site that it has a CAREAG (Conservation, Access, Recreation & Education Advisory Group) with which it is meant to consult, but this group was not advised of the plans until they were finalised. The Angling Trust is calling on the Company to admit that it has failed in its corporate responsibility to the community.

Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd said: “As the National Governing Body for angling, we are outraged that this huge water company is banning all angling without any consultation, not even with its loyal customers. Our research shows that many more people would go fishing if there were more access to waters. Anything which reduces access is therefore bad news, and disastrous for people living near the reservoir who rely on it for their fishing as well as those hotels and B&Bs which supply overnight accommodation to anglers visiting the water.”
The Angling Trust is writing to Tony Wray, the Chief Executive of Severn Trent demanding a meeting to discuss the situation and the Company’s future attitude to angling. The Trust will also be asking the Government why there is no organisation with responsibility for regulating water companies’ responsibilities with regard to provision of recreation.

The Angling Trust works alongside the Angling Development Board which is funded by Sport England to grow and sustain participation in angling. The disastrous decision at Draycote will impact on the two organisations’ work in this area and will decrease the social and economic benefits of such a major fishery to the local community. Anglers travel from all over the country to fish Draycote and the ban means that they will no longer be spending money in the area around the reservoir.
