FIPSed, the world governing body for angling, last week issued new world rankings, based on competition results from the past 5 years, and England is number 1 in six of the ten categories and in the top three in three others. During May Environment Agency Fisheries Enforcement Officers have continued patrolling the river banks and responding to reports of out of season fishing. Two officers in Northumbria dealt with 26 close season and 11 licence offences in one day alone. Patrols across England also detected other offences, such as unlicensed fishing, unauthorised crayfish traps and prohibited baits. In the Southeast Region, Angling Trust volunteers are working in partnership with the Environment Agency on Operation CLAMP DOWN to identify hotspots where illegal…
Fish Legal solicitors have exposed serious failings at the Environment Agency (EA) in responding to water pollution which kills wildlife. For many years Fish Legal members have complained of the Agency failing to respond to fish kill incidents effectively, including not completing full fish kill surveys to assess the numbers of dead fish or the impact on remaining fish populations. Fish Legal can now show from the EA’s own damning data just how bad the situation really is. TFish Legal…
Why not give Dad something he really wants this Father’s Day – take him fishing! It's a great way to spend quality family time together. The 2013 river coarse fishing season starts on Father’s Day, and Environment Agency annual rod licence holders can take a friend or family member fishing with them for free on the 16th of June. The Father’s Day special promotion is part of the annual Take a Friend Fishing campaign, run by the Angling Trades Association…
In the past two months the Angling Trust's Voluntary Bailiff Service (VBS) has gathered momentum. It started as a small pilot project in the South East of England, but it is now growing very rapidly and chalking up a number of successes in the battle against poaching and other illegal activity on the banks. A very wide range of people have volunteered their time to work alongside paid Environment Agency staff. Discussions are now underway with the Environment Agency about…

Everything seems to be going right for James Dent (MAP/Marukyu), a 21 year old Joiner from Yarm, with two recent wins under his belt already this year in the Dynamite Baits Festival and qualifying for the ‘Maver Match This’ Final, as well as coming second in the Milo Festival and being selected for Sensas U23’s England World Championship Team. James came to one of his favourite venues, The Oaks Lakes, in Sessay for the ninth Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier on…
Finally, reasonable weather turned up for this, the seventh Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier of 2013, held at Maver Larford Lakes, near Stourbridge on Saturday 4th May. Again as is usual for this event all three lakes were in use, Specimen, Match and Arena, but strangely the fishery staff could not predict where the winner was likely to come from.  Many of the competitors fancied Specimen Lake being the favourite due to the high numbers of large carp that the water…

The Angling Trust, along with Thames Anglers Conservancy (TAC), are calling on all anglers and angling clubs in London and the South-East to speak out in favour of plans to clean up the tidal Thames through the construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel. An application to build the tunnel has finally been submitted and the public have until May 28th to register as 'interested parties' - this the only way that the Planning Inspectorate can now hear views and opinions.…
The first qualifier match of this year’s Angling Trust & Canal & River Trust Stillwater Championship was fished at Boddington Reservoir using pegs 50 to 99 on Sunday 12th May 2013. After what had been a really warm spell of weather conditions this changed dramatically with a cold wind blowing down the reservoir and rain later in the match. Unfortunately this had the effect of driving the carp out into deep water and it required casts of 60 to 70…
