The application for planning permission was made by Lighthouse Caledonia, a company which already has 35 fish farms in the Hebrides and the West Coast of Scotland. The company has a…
The Angling Trust and WWF-UK have welcomed Defra’s recent statement committing to a package of new measures to deliver the EU Water Framework Directive. The commitments in the statement provide assurances which satisfactorily address the numerous points raised by these organisations over the past year in their joint application for Judicial Review of the Government and Environment Agency’s first round of River Basin Management Plans. On this basis, WWF-UK and the Angling Trust have agreed to withdraw their legal action…

British Waterways is relocating over half a tonne of fish from the side ponds of the famous Caen Hill Flight of Locks on the historic Kennet & Avon Canal, near Devizes, to improve conditions for aquatic wildlife including dragonflies. The relocation follows a successful trial project in 2009, which saw a tonne of fish, including large tench, carp, bream, roach, perch and pike removed from the ponds. The significant numbers of boats that move through the locks at Caen Hill…

Anglers expressed dismay and anger that a hydropower project at Pershore on the Warwickshire Avon has been given the go-ahead by the Environment Agency, despite evidence that the scheme will destroy vital fish habitat and reduce flows to a trickle. The Angling Trust objected to the scheme on the grounds that the developer had provided absolutely no environmental information with the application, that the flows over the weir at Pershore will be reduced to a trickle for most of the…

The Environment Agency is looking to cut back on rod licence checks, the Pike Anglers Club (PAC) can reveal. It comes as figures obtained under Freedom of Information laws show a sharp fall in both the number of EA bailiffs and the bankside checks they carry out. Sources say the agency is looking to "outsource" some of the work carried out by bailiffs. It wants fisheries to check whether anglers have an EA licence before selling them day tickets, and…
Investigations by the Angling Trust into reasons behind the declining salmon stocks in Dartmoor’s rivers have revealed that the Environment Agency was aware of the cause as early as 2008, but as yet has failed to take any action to stop the demise of this threatened species.
