The Angling Trust welcomed news this week that the Environment Agency has maintained its objection to Nocton Dairies’ proposed 3,770 cow dairy farm in Lincolnshire and that the farm will not be going ahead. The scale and intensity of the farm had alarmed anglers and environmental campaigners due to the risk of pollution of underground and surface water. In a statement, Nocton Diaries said: “We are writing today to North Kesteven District Council to formally withdraw our application for planning…
Angling’s representative body the Angling Trust has written to Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon MP asking him to investigate the impact of the proposed new high speed line between London and Birmingham on fisheries. More than 40 river and still water fisheries have been identified as being adjacent to the route, including the iconic Savay and Korda lakes, which have long histories as prime carp and tench waters, attracting anglers from all over the country to fish them. Trains will travel…
British Waterways has launched a National Angling Advisory Group in order to gain valuable feedback on its work. The members have been chosen for their individual expertise in angling, their knowledge of specific geographical regions and their experience of working in the charitable sector. At the request of British Waterways, the Angling Trust (angling’s representative body) helped to recruit the members of the Group who all give their time on a voluntary basis. The Group will meet three times a…
Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon MP announced yesterday a review of the current licensing regime for cormorant control at an Angling Summit, attended by 30 angling and fisheries organisations. This announcement followed a letter to the Minister from the Angling Trust last November, calling for action to be taken to protect stillwater and river fisheries which are suffering significant losses as a result of cormorant predation. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will invite the Angling Trust, as…
Fish Legal’s lawyers have written to the Director General for the Environment in Brussels to request that the European Commission considers infraction proceedings against the UK government in Northern Ireland for breaches of environmental legislation under plans to reopen the River Lagan for canal navigation which would have a devastating effect on recovering salmon and trout populations. Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager said, “It is expected that this event will attract many of the countries affiliated to FIPSed and England…

The Angling Trust has written to Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon MP asking him to to reduce the red tape tangling up the process for applying for a licence to control fish-eating birds, which cause untold damage the UK’s £3.5 billion angling industry. Many angling clubs and fisheries which have been in existence for generations are struggling to survive, putting at risk vital direct and indirect rural employment. Without adequate fish stocks, their rivers or lakes cease to attract visiting and…
Following months of pressure from the Angling Trust, Draycote Fly Fishers Association and Jeremy Wright MP, Severn Trent Water has finally advertised for a tenant to run the Draycote reservoir fishery next year. However, at a recent meeting with the club, the company refused to back down on its recently-imposed ban on access to anglers’ vehicles, claiming that parked cars might pose a risk to the Company’s tankers making deliveries at the treatment works. Only a handful of tankers use…

Water companies have always been reluctant to supply anglers with information about pollution – but a Tribunal which deals with appeals on information issues has now concluded that water and sewage companies in England and Wales are not covered by laws on freedom of information. This is a huge blow to the Angling Trust’s campaigns and legal action to make water companies accountable for the damage they cause routinely to fisheries up and down the country. The decision means that…
The Angling Trust intends to work with the Environment Agency to put in place new arrangements for anglers, angling clubs, fisheries and consultatives to have a say in the management of fisheries and angling, following the Government’s decision yesterday to axe the Agency’s statutory advisory committees. The Government announced that it is to cut the Environmental Protection Advisory Committees (EPAC) and Fisheries, Ecology and Recreation Advisory Committees (FERAC) as part of a wide-ranging reduction in arms-length bodies. It has also…

Salmon & Trout Association and the Angling Trust issue guidelines to anglers to help contain spread of invasion In September, sharp-eyed anglers fishing on Grafham Water, Rutland, found a new species of shrimp. This was identified by the EA as Dikerogammarus villosus, now known as “the killer shrimp”. This invasive and aggressive species from Eastern Europe kills a range of native species, including young fish, and significantly alters ecosystems.
