The Angling Trust’s Anglers with Disabilities England Team took part in the 11th Freshwater World Championships at Ponte De Sor, Portugal on 8th-9th August 2009. The Sor River at Ponte De Sor is clear water and slow stream with the main fish specimens present being Barbel, Bogas, Carps and Bleaks. Roger Holmes became the Angling Trust Veterans National Champion on Wednesday 5th August at Makins Fishery at Wolvey Warwickshire with an exceptional winning weight of 52.350kg fishing Phase 1, Lake 2 on peg A14. Roger’s tactics were to fish pellet and waggler feed on 8mm pellets. Roger who usually fishes for Nottingham AA caught mainly mirror Carp with the odd ghost and common carp. The Angling Trust has announced a number of cuts to its central operations in Nottingham and Leominster. Despite widespread publicity and distribution of more than half a million membership leaflets, the level of recruitment has to date, fallen below expectations. In extreme conditions of 38C the England U18s team finished in 5th placing this year in the World Championships. Canal anglers and angling clubs have reacted furiously to news that British Waterways (BW) is to cut its fisheries staff by 50% as part of its restructuring. The national body plans to reduce the number of specialist fishery positions from three to two and administrative support staff from three to one. The 2nd Veterans World Angling Championship took place 11th - 12th July at Furzton Lake, Milton Keynes. This year for the first time the Angling Trust hosted the event, with seven teams of four anglers per team taking part. After three days of practising the England team were mainly catching roach with bloodworm and joker attack. The tactic was to introduce 12 good balls of specially mixed groundbait and Leam as an initial feed and to top up where necessary.…

A major, new research programme on the social and community benefits of angling is underway. This research aims to collect vital evidence about the influence that angling has on participants, young people and the communities in which angling takes place. The Angling Trust has announced that MP and keen angler, Martin Salter, is to open National Fishing Week at the CLA Game Fair at 3pm on 24th July. Matt Hall, 2003 Fish O Mania Champion, won the 16th and final qualifier on a scorching day at Lindholme Lakes Fishery on Wednesday 1st July with a top weight of 133lbs 15ozs.
