A suspected pollution incident in Huddersfield is under investigation after hundreds of fish were killed. The Environment Agency received reports of distressed and dying fish in the River Colne and Huddersfield Broad Canal on the afternoon of Friday, 20 March. Environment officers attended immediately and have been on site over the weekend. The Environment Agency is reminding anglers in Lincolnshire that the closed season for fishing has begun. This warning is issued as the closed season begins. Closed season, which protects spawning fish, started on March 15 and runs until June 15 inclusive making it illegal to fish in any river, stream or drain during this period. Anglers of all disciplines have reacted furiously to comments by actor Robson Green about releasing fish. While publicising his new TV series, he reportedly said that he can’t understand anglers who release fish and incorrectly claimed that up to 9 out of 10 of them die. The Angling Trust has announced the appointment of Tim Macpherson as its Head of Marketing and Communications Tim joined the organisation on March 16th with a brief to head up the campaign to recruit 20,000 members for the Trust over the next year – and ultimately increase that to 100,000 by 2011. The Angling Trust has announced that another major angling organisation will become a part of the new organisation. The Confederation of English Fly Fishers voted unanimously at its reconvened AGM on Saturday 14th March, at Rutland Water, to wind up and become a part of the Angling Trust, as soon as governing body status for the Trust is confirmed. Fish Legal, the legal arm of the newly-formed Angling Trust, has taken decisive action against a team of poachers operating in Eastern England. The poachers were found guilty but were fined just £60 and had their equipment confiscated. Fish Legal’s lawyers have threatened the poachers with an injunction to prevent them returning. The Angling Trust today launched an online petition to reverse a decision by Severn Trent Water which would see angling banned from the dam wall and East bank of Foremark Reservoir in Derbyshire.
